Born in Germany of Polish descent, Martin Rubinstein received his initial dance training in Germany in Central European expressionist dance and in acrobatics. His family migrated to Australia when he was thirteen and on arrival in Melbourne Rubinstein started ballet classes with Jennie Brenan passing his Royal Academy exams up to Solo Seal. He was subsequently invited to appear in Edouard Borovansky's studio performances in the late 1930s and eventually joined the Borovansky Ballet. He danced with the Borovansky Ballet throughout the 1940s until ill health forced him to retire. With the Borovansky Ballet Rubinstein was known for his elevation and his strong beats and turns. His was renowned for his portrayal of the Golden Slave in Scheherazade and for his performances in Petrouchka and Le Beau Danube.
After retiring from performing Rubinstein taught extensively and was for many years an examiner for the Royal Academy. He received the award for services to dance education at the Australian Dance Awards in 2000.
