Stringer, Walter: Dancers of Kolobok Dance Company, 1973
Research Materials | Other Resources
Kolobok Dance Company was founded in Melbourne in 1970 by Eva Segal and Marina Berezowsky. The company derived its name from an old Slavonic fairytale about a bread roll (kolobok) that rolled off a baker's window ledge and ran round the world making friends and growing larger by picking up crumbs from each country visited. It aimed to give artistic expression to the varied dance traditions brought to Australia by migrants from around the world.
Kolobok was directed for the duration of its existence by Berezowsky. It was given federal government funding in 1974 and became a fully professional group the following year. The company toured continuously during its lifetime to all Australian states except Western Australia giving performances in capital city venues, regional festivals and in hundreds of schools. It ceased operations in 1983 due to funding difficulties.
