Born in Northhampton, England, Margie Medlin came to Australia at a very early age and was brought up in South Australia. Her interest in theatre and film began while at school and she completed her initial tertiary training at the City Art Institute in Sydney, majoring in new media and film making. A year at the Yale School of Drama followed in 1989 where Medlin was a special research fellow under lighting designer Jennifer Tipton.

On her return to Australia Medlin worked in Sydney and Melbourne with a number of dance artists, including Russell Dumas, before undertaking further training in lighting design, scenography and advanced computer applications for theatre design in the United Kingdom in 1992. She also holds a masters degree in interior design from RMIT University, Melbourne, which she completed in 1998 and between 1999 and 2001 was artist in residence at ZKM-Institute for Visual Media in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Medlin has worked with several Australian companies and independent artists including Dance Works, Company in Space, Lucy Guerin Inc., Rebecca Hilton and Ros Warby. She has also worked independently producing video and DVD installations that explore her interests in cinematic space and the relationship between movement and image. She has been the recipient of a number of awards for her work. They include a Bessie in New York in 1997 for her lighting of Guerin's Two Lies, several awards for her work with Sandra Parker and Dance Works on In the Heart of the Eye, a John Truscott Foundation Award for Design in 2002, and a Science and Art Production Award from the Wellcome Trust London in 2005.
