Steven Brett was born in Adelaide but received his early dance training with Robyn Croft and Doug Gilchrist in Townsville. Later he trained at the Bryan Lawrence School of Ballet in Canberra and then at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and the Australian Ballet School. During his time at the VCA he danced in a number of shows with Kolobok Dance Company.
In 1986 Brett attended a performance by Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) in Melbourne, after which he auditioned for the company. He subsequently joined NDT2, Nederlands Dans Theater’s junior company and toured with them to Cuba, Taiwan, and Brazil between 1986 and 1988.
Brett successfully auditioned for Rambert Dance Company in 1988 and danced with the company until 1998 when he was appointed to the position of Rambert rehearsal director. In 2000 he became the company’s associate artistic director. During his time as associate artistic director Brett has overseen productions for many choreographers, including Siobhan Davies, Per Jonsson, Jeremy James, Twyla Tharp, Merce Cunningham, Glen Tetley and Javier de Frutos.
