Buzz Dance Theatre was founded by Derek Holtzinger in 1985 as 2 Dance. Founded as a professional dance in education company, and led by Holtzinger and Sue Peacock, it was managed in its early days by West Australian Ballet. In 1986 the company expanded to include three more dancers and a part time administrator, and the group was re-named 2 Dance Plus. In 1991 Phillippa Clarke was appointed artistic director, a position she held for the next seven years. During this time the company grew to encompass six dancers, a general manager and a team of administrative and production support staff. 2 Dance Plus changed its name in 1998 to Buzz Dance Theatre. That same year Paige Gordon assumed the role of artistic director. Gordon left the company in 2003 and in January 2004 Felicity Bott took on the role of artistic director.
Buzz conducted its first overseas tour to Durban, South Africa, in 2001. In 2002 the company performed at the 14th ASSITEJ Festival in Seoul, Korea, and in 2003 toured for the first time to the eastern states of Australia.
Buzz Dance Theatre produces and presents contemporary dance performances of original Australian dance works devised for specific age groups from primary through to tertiary level, together with complementary workshop programs. The company also undertakes school holiday workshops, public seasons, feature performances for special events and community dance development activities. In 2006 it was the recipient of the Australian Dance Award for services to dance education.
