Born in Canberra, Adam Marchant began dance lessons with Bryan Lawrence and Janet Karin at the Bryan Lawrence School of Ballet (now National Capital Ballet School). While with the school Marchant performed in many seasons by the school's performing arm, National Capital Dancers. He danced leading roles in works such as Giselle, Coppelia and Nutcracker and partnered other emerging artists including Margrete Helgeby and Catherine Goss.
Marchant auditioned for the Australian Ballet in 1981 and joined the company at the beginning of 1982. He was promoted to soloist in 1986, senior artist in 1988 and principal in 1989. At the end of 1993, after twelve years with the company, Marchant resigned and joined the cast of West Side Story to dance the role of Bernado, leader of the Sharks gang, and to freelance. He returned to the Australian Ballet in 1995 and continued to dance with the company until he retired at the end of 1997. During his time with the Australian Ballet Marchant danced leading roles across the company's traditional and contemporary repertoire. He also forged strong partnerships with the Australian Ballet's principal female dancers, in particular with Miranda Coney.
After his retirement from the Australian Ballet Marchant retrained as a Pilates instructor. He currently lives in Perth and in addition to his Pilates teaching is working with Margrete Helgeby and her project-based company, Co.loaded.
