Trafford Whitelock was born in Brisbane but grew up in Sydney. He took dance classes in Sydney and worked with Mischa Burlakov and Louise Lightfoot's First Australian Ballet and with Helene Kirsova's Kirsova Ballet. In 1936 with the First Australian Ballet he danced the role of Petrouchka in the first production of that ballet in Australia.
He had a major career as a radio broadcaster and left Australia in 1950 to work in London with the BBC. He returned to Australia in 1987.
