Wu Lin Dance Theatre was formed in 1997 by Sun Ping and Tina Yong. A cross-cultural contemporary dance company drawing on Chinese and Australian dance traditions, Wu Lin Dance Theatre creates narrative works incorporating video and live music.
In 1998 Wu Lin Dance Theatre premiered its first production, Broken Moon, in Studio 1, School of Dance, Victorian College of the Arts. The company's next production was Journey of the Northern Tiger in 1999, which was choreographed by Yong and Sun and performed by Shona Erskine, Sarah Miller, Yumi Umiumare, Sun and Yong. This work was toured to Harbin in 2001. Later works have included, Nushu, the Women's Script (2000), which was conceived, choreographed and performed by Yong and Sun, and a commission in 2001 from the Castlemaine Festival to create The Tiger Gold. Sun is currently completing his masters degree at the Victorian College of the arts and as part of this course has created Bamboo Growing in the Mist.
Wu Lin Dance Theatre also performs in schools where it presents Chinese classical and folk dances, including Mongolian Dance, Happy Face Mask Dance, Ribbon Dance, and Drunken Warrior Sword Dance.
