Dance Exchange was founded by Nanette Hassall and Russell Dumas in the mid to late 1970s. Hassall later founded Dance Works in Melbourne and the company was directed from then on solely by Dumas. Dance Exchange also initiated a project called Dancelink which set out to invite artists from America and Europe to give solo concerts in Australia. The first artist to perform in Australia under this scheme was Steve Paxton who gave concerts in Sydney and Melbourne in 1984.
