BalletLab, founded by Phillip Adams, is a small project-based dance company which incorporates hybrid contemporary dance and arts practices as part of its mission to ‘provoke dialogue about contemporary dance and hybrid arts practice.’ Since BalletLab’s inception Adams, as artistic director and sole choreographer, has taken the company on tour throughout Australia and internationally to China, Scotland, Germany, England, Korea, Mongolia, Rumania, Bulgaria and the United States. As a project-based company Adams has brought a number of dancers to work with the company, including Michelle Heaven, Luke George, Stephanie Lake, Shona Erskine, Ryan Lowe, Gerard Van Dyck, Brooke Stamp, Kyle Kremerskothen, and Brooke Leader.
BalletLab debuted at the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne in 1999, with the work Amplification, choreographed by Philip Adams. Adams has subsequently choreographed Ei Fallen (2000), Upholster (2001) with turntable compositions by Lynton Carr and costume design by Dorotka Sapinska, Endling (2002) with set design and costumes by Sally Smart, Nativity (2003) with set and lighting design by Bluebottle and sound design by Soncha Iconao, Incarnation and Fiction (both 2004), Stranger Than Fiction (2005), Origami (2006) and Brindabella (2007), choreographed with New York choreographer Miguel Gutierrez, composer David Chisholm and visual artist Valerie Sparks.
