Entr'acte Theatre, formerly known as the Sydney Corporeal-Mime Theatre, was founded by Australian Elisabeth Burke and French-Canadian Pierre Thibaudeau in Sydney in 1979. Both had spent the preceding several years studying, teaching and performing in Europe and North America. Both had studied corporeal-mime with Etienne Decroux in Paris. The company changed its name to Entr'acte Theatre in 1982 to reflect an increased interest in experimental theatre beyond corporeal-mime. Entr'acte Theatre became the resident company at Sydney's Performance Space during 1983.

Entr'acte's first production, The Shape of Time (1980), was a duo performed by Burke and Thibaudeau. Their next production, A La Carte (1981), included a cast of nine performers who were undertaking training with Burke and Thibaudeau at their coporeal-mime studio. Subsequent productions include The Trial (1982), When the Bough Breaks (1982), Refractions (1983), which was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, Concerto (1985), Blues for Heaven (1985), and Ostraka (1986). Composers and musicians who worked with the company included Sarah de Jong, Blair Greenberg and Colin Offord and visual artists who collaborated included Regis Lansac.

In 1985 the company was invited to the London International Mime Festival to perform Refractions. Performances in London were followed by others in Nottingham, Utrecht, and Paris. Subsequent overseas tours included a visit to Indonesia in 1986, sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs, which included performances in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Ubud. Entr'acte Theatre returned to Indonesia in 1987 for a seven-week teaching residency at the Academy of Performing Arts, Yogyakarta. The company guested at Melbourne's Green Mill Dance Festival in 1993 where performances included Possessed Dispossessed, The Memory Room and Acqua Azzurru.
