Born in Madras, India, Benazir Hussain was brought up in Brentwood, Essex, and trained at the Royal Ballet School, London. She joined the Royal Ballet in 1990 and was promoted to soloist in 1994. In 1997 Hussain and her then husband, Perth-born Errol Pickford who was also a dancer with the Royal, took a year's leave of absence to dance with West Australian Ballet. Hussain joined the Australian Ballet in 1998 but returned to West Australian Ballet in 1999, remaining with that company until 2006.
