Timothy Godon was born in Wellington, New Zealand, but moved to Australia at an early age. He began his dance training in Sydney with Joan and Monica Halliday from where he was accepted into the Australian Ballet School. He joined the Australian Ballet in 1979 and performed with the company for three years before leaving to work in Europe. His European career began in The Hague with Jiri Kylian and Nederlands Dans Theater in 1982 . Gordon worked and toured with NDT until 1984 when he joined Frankfurt Ballet. In Frankfurt he danced the Forsythe repertoire and was later appointed ballet master to the company.
