Rex Reid learnt dancing in Adelaide before travelling to London in 1938 for further study there. He danced professionally in England and Europe with several companies including the International Ballet, London Ballet and Ballet Rambert, and also performed in West End revues. He rejoined Ballet Rambert for its 1947-49 tour to Australia. When the Rambert company returned Reid stayed on and helped establish the National Theatre Ballet Company, for whom he choreographed several works including Corroboree to the score by John Antill.
Reid has taught performed and choreographed around the world but, in addition to the landmark Corroboree, Reid's choreographic output over the years has included works for Ballet Guild and Ballet Victoria, the Rex Reid Dance Players, West Australian Ballet, which he directed between 1969 and 1973, and the Australian Ballet, as well as work for musical theatre and television.
