Maggi Sietsma is a graduate of the Australian Ballet School. She performed and toured with the Australian Ballet and as a soloist with London Festival Ballet before pursuing her interest in contemporary dance. Currently artistic director of Expressions Dance Company, Sietsma began her choreographic career at the Spoleto Festival in Italy where she performed with the Théâtre du chêne noir. She subsequently founded a multimedia performing company, Muance, and toured extensively in Europe.

On her return to Australia in 1982, Sietsma became resident choreographer with the North Queensland Ballet Company, now Dance North. From 1983 to 1985 she was a lecturer in dance at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education, now Queensland University of Technology, where she was involved in developing the first Bachelor of Arts (Dance) course in Queensland.

Sietsma has created over thirty works for Expressions Dance Company and under her direction the company has toured extensively in Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the United States. Her choreography frequently examines relationships between men and women in present day society, she often incorporates the spoken word into her work, and she places great emphasis on research and collaboration in the development of her pieces. Sietsma has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award and a Churchill Fellowship.
