Cadi McCarthy was born in Canberra where she received her early training at the Kim Harvey School of Dance. She moved to Western Australia for her tertiary education, graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with a BA (Dance) in 1996, after which she joined Paige Gordon and Performance Group in Canberra. She returned to Western Australia to work with Buzz Dance Theatre from 1998 until 2001, when she toured with this company to Durban, South Africa. At this time she also worked with choreographer and film director Danielle Micich on her films Sugar and Blue and performed Duet Zurich, choreographed by Netherlands choreographer Kim Van de Boon, as part of the 2001 Perth International Festival.

In 2002, she established Cadi McCarthy and Company, a Canberra-based project company whose annual productions reflected McCarthy's choreographic practice of creating dance that is highly accessible to general public audiences. The company's repertoire, all choreographed and directed by McCarthy, included the full-length works Awkward (2003 and 2006), Restless 1 (2004), Lip Sip Suck (2005), Shambles (2007), Grappling for the Edge (2008), and Restless (2009). While directing this company, she simultaneously worked as an independent artist in films, live performance and choreography both in the Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia. She was also employed as a dance teacher, was a guest lecturer at WAAPA, took classes for numerous companies and completed a Master of Education in 2003.

McCarthy was the recipient of the Canberra Critics Award in 2004 for her tenacity in the arts and her work Restless 1, and in 2006 for Awkward. In 2007 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, allowing her to visit dance companies and organizations in the UK, Denmark, Germany, the USA and Canada. In 2009 she undertook a residency at the Chez Bushwick experimental dance studio in Brooklyn, New York, and also received a World Dance Alliance International Young Choreographer award, enabling her to work with choreographers and dancers in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

In May 2009, McCarthy again moved to Perth to take up the position of artistic director of Buzz Dance Theatre.
