Dance Concert (1967 - 1977)

Research Materials | Other Resources

Dance Concert was formed as an amateur folk and character dance ensemble by Margaret Walker in 1967. This small group of dancers, a number of whom including Dianna Moore came from the school of Sadie Lewis in Hurstville, performed a repertoire which drew from numerous ethnic traditions including those of Russia, Vietnam, India, Spain, Hungary, The Philippines and El Salvador. Walker organised masterclasses with prominent international artists, and the group performed both within Victoria and interstate.

In 1974 Dance Concert received an Australia Council grant to run a performance and participation program for schools. The group undertook school tours of regional New South Wales as well as a significant tour of the Northern Territory, during which Walker's adopted son Kim received his first professional dance experience.

Dance Concert was incorporated with a board of directors in 1976 and operated as a professional character and folk company with Walker as artistic director until 1977.
