Bradley Chatfield was born in Mordialloc, Victoria. He began training in jazz, ballet and tap under Vivienne Dunn, and in 1988 was accepted into the Australian Ballet School. After graduating in 1990 he joined the Hong Kong Ballet where he performed lead roles in Paquita, Spectre de la Rose, Troy Games and Tales of Hoffmann.

Chatfield joined Sydney Dance Company in 1991, remaining with this company until 2009 and performing the full company repertoire to great acclaim. During this time, the solo piece THWACK! was created on him for the company by Garry Stewart in 1996. He toured extensively with Sydney Dance Company, both in Australia and internationally, including tours to the United States, Europe, China, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand and South America. In 2008 he was appointed to the role of deputy dance director and in 2009 became dance director for the company. His final appearance with Sydney Dance Company was in September 2009 as Sid, the role created on him by Aszure Barton in her 2008 commissioned work Sid's Waltzing Masquerade.

Beyond his work with Sydney Dance Company Chatfield's performance highlights include starring as Mr Mistoffelees in Really Useful Group and Seoul & Co touring production of Cats in South Korea 2003/04 and performing in Worldwide Tour Company's Aida. Other credits include reproducing Graeme Murphy's Sequenza VII for the New Zealand School of Dance and, in conjunction with Brett Morgan, reproducing Graeme Murphy's Free Radicals for the Hong Academy of Performing Arts 2010 graduation.

Chatfield was the recipient of best male dancer awards at the Green Room Awards 2003, Australian Dance Awards 2003 and Mo Awards 2004.

In 2010 he was appointed rehearsal director for Dance North.
