Born in Gilgandra, New South Wales, Jean Garling was educated in Gulargambone, Dubbo and Sydney. She trained as a physiotherapist at the University of Sydney and worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, with the Australian Army Medical Women's Service, at the Concord Repatriation General Hospital and at Sydney Hospital.
Garling was active in theatrical circles in Sydney. She trained in ballet, danced with the Lightfoot-Burlakov First Australian Ballet and briefly in J. C. Williamson productions. While serving with the Australian Army during World War II Garling often enriched camp life in Darwin with her performances. She was also involved in backstage activities with various organisations including the City of Sydney Eisteddfod and Musica Viva. In 1950 she wrote Australian Notes on the Ballet. This publication had the subtitle 'highlights of ballet in Australia showing contemporary trend and influences up to the present world premiere of Corroboree' and is a brief overview of ballet in Australia from the 1830s to 1950.
