In 1979 Mark Gordon graduated from the Rusden State College of Victoria with a Bachelor of Education majoring in Drama, Dance and Media Studies. After a period of work as a freelance dancer, choreographer and teacher in a variety of tertiary institutions he joined TasDance as assistant director in 1982.

In 1984 he was appointed the inaugural executive officer of Ausdance Victoria, a post he held for ten years. In the same year he also joined the staff of the National Theatre Drama School in St Kilda as a tutor, later becoming technical director, assistant director and coordinator of the youth program. On joining the staff of the National Theatre Ballet School under the direction of Marilyn Jones, he taught composition, improvisation, injury prevention, diet and nutrition, anatomy and physiology.

Gordon was appointed to the ACT Cultural Council in 2000, chairing the ACT Theatre, Dance, Film and Video grants committee as well as serving as a peer for the Australia Council Dance Board. He was the recipient of the award for services to dance at the 2005 Australian Dance Awards.

Mark Gordon was artistic director of the Australian Choreographic Centre, Canberra from its inception in 1996 until its closure in 2007. In this role he developed concept, structure, programs and funding base of the Centre and brokered a range of partnerships with arts, educational and government institutions.

Gordon is a qualified masseur and holds a private pilot license.
